FindWhiz

What would you like to know?

Answers about the builder, your search choice and what stays on your device.

What is FindWhiz?

It is a Firefox toolbar search builder. Keywords and optional fields become one Yahoo query. A wider page lets you keep Search beside Presets and Filters.

Which Firefox version do I need?

Desktop Firefox 140 or later. Android support has not been tested or declared in the manifest.

Why is the download on findwhiz.com?

FindWhiz is distributed directly from findwhiz.com and signed by Mozilla. It has no public Mozilla addons store listing. Firefox uses the update file on this site to find signed updates.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no FindWhiz account or sign in. Your forms and preferences stay in Firefox on your device.

How do I open the popup?

Open FindWhiz from the Firefox toolbar or extensions menu. If welcome is unfinished, choose "I accept" there and open the toolbar button again. That button records setup completion only.

Does it change my default search engine?

This addon requests permission to update your default search engine to Yahoo. Firefox asks separately. You can decline that change or choose another default later in Firefox Settings under Search.

Can I keep my current default engine?

Yes. The popup still builds and opens Yahoo queries if you decline the default search change. Completing welcome does not accept that change.

Does the builder use other search providers?

No. The popup, wider builder and fw address bar shortcut open searches directly on Yahoo. Your normal browser default can be something else.

How does an exact phrase work?

FindWhiz puts quotation marks around the phrase. Enter the words without adding your own quotes. Yahoo decides how to use the operator.

How do I enter alternatives and excluded words?

Separate alternatives with commas. They become a group joined by OR. Separate excluded words with spaces. Each gets an exclusion sign.

How do site chips work?

Choose a chip to use its domain. Choose it again to clear it. Typing a custom domain clears the selected chip. The defaults are YouTube, Amazon, Target, Wikipedia, Pinterest, Yelp and Reddit.

Can I edit the site chip list?

Yes. Add, remove, reorder or reset up to 12 chips in Settings. Their names and domains stay in Firefox local extension storage.

Which time and region choices are available?

Any time, past day, week or month, plus 12 countries and Any region. Yahoo does not document these URL options, and they may change. There is no year filter or language picker.

Why does a filter sometimes change no results?

The preview shows the query FindWhiz builds. Yahoo controls how it handles operators, time and region. FindWhiz cannot guarantee a particular result set.

Can I switch off or reorder a filter?

Yes, including Keywords and Site. In Filters, switch a card off to leave it out of the query. Drag Move or use Up and Down to set the order of visible fields.

How many presets can I save?

Up to 20 named forms, with trimmed names of up to 40 characters. Each stores fields, filter order, enabled state, time and region. Saving the same name replaces it.

Does Clear form delete my presets?

No. Clear form empties fields, time and region. Saved presets remain until you delete them or clear the extension data. Turning remembering off keeps presets too.

What happens when remembering is off?

Turning it off removes saved field values. New typing, time and region clear when that builder closes. Card preferences, presets and site chips remain in Firefox.

Can results use my current tab?

Yes. Settings lets you choose a new results tab or the current one. A new tab is the default. The fw shortcut follows that setting too.

How do I open the wider builder?

Use the expand button in the popup. Your current form carries over locally, even with remembering off. On a wide screen, Search is beside Presets and Filters.

What does the right click item do?

Select text and choose "Search with FindWhiz". The contextMenus permission enables that item. It fills Keywords in the wider builder. Text goes to Yahoo only if you press Search, and is never sent to FindWhiz.

How does fw in the address bar work?

Type fw, then a space and text, for a plain Yahoo search. Submit without text to open the wider builder. If welcome is unfinished, the gated builder opens setup first.

Does FindWhiz receive my searches?

No. The builder combines fields on your device. Opening results sends the query directly to Yahoo, which receives the usual request information such as your IP address. Yahoo has its own privacy practices.

What does the optional data setting control?

Firefox offers technicalAndInteraction as optional and checks the box by default during installation. It controls install and default search status messages into the eligible FindWhiz install page. Declining it leaves the builder available.

Can I turn off those page messages later?

Yes. In about:addons, open FindWhiz and choose Permissions and data. Turning the optional setting off stops pending messages. The extension reads the saved choice and requests no permission itself.

What is inside an install message?

One boolean flag: extInstalled, then at most one searchEngineAccepted or searchEngineNotAccepted. There is no query, identifier or attribution data. They stay in the browser, with no server report.

Why did the Thanks page open?

On a fresh install with the optional data choice off, FindWhiz opens Thanks once. No automatic welcome tab or install page messages are sent then. Open the toolbar button to reach welcome.

Does the extension use cookies or analytics?

No. It reads and writes no cookies and sends no API reports. These website files use no analytics, cookies or browser storage. Sending the contact form uses FormSubmit.

What happens to my presets after removal?

Firefox removes saved presets, settings and site chips with the extension data. FindWhiz has no server copy to restore. Reinstalling starts with defaults.

How do I remove FindWhiz and check my search engine?

Remove it from the Firefox Extensions list. Then open Firefox Settings under Search and check the default you want. The extension registers no uninstall URL and sends no uninstall report.
